Santorini
When the volcano Thira exploded thousands of years ago, it washed away the Minoan civilization on Crete, and may have given birth to the legend of Atlantis, theorized by many to be Akrotiri, an ancient city being excavated on one end of the island. Santorini, and the two othe islands next to it, for the lip of the caldera of the now flooded volcano. The views are stunning! We hiked from Fira (the main town, and port where the ship docked) to Oia, a picturesque village about 13 kilometers away, then celebrated RIchard's birthday with lunch in Ammoudi, the fishing village directly below Oia.
